Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been an increasing problem since its isolation in England in 1961. 1 The publicity surrounding MRSA, and nosocomial infection in general, has never been greater. The introduction by the Department of Health in the United Kingdom of mandatory surveillance schemes for both MRSA bacteraemia and surgical site infection (SSI) in orthopaedic surgery from 2001 and 2004, respectively, highlights the importance of nosocomial infection. 2 Our aim is to examine the rising problem of infection with MRSA and its associated economic implications. Current practice in the UK combined with a literature review have been undertaken in order to provide further suggestions for the lowering of rates of infection particularly from the perspective of orthopaedics and trauma.

Evaluation of Tigecycline Activity Against Methicillin-Resistante Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Biological Samples
Tigecycline is a new glycylcycline antibiotic structurally similar to minocycline antibiotic. It has broad spectrum activity, including Staphylococcus aureus infections. This is the first study that evaluated the activity of Tigecycline against Staphylococcus aureus isolated from biological samples in Iran. In vitro activity of tigecycline against 160 Staphylococcus aureus including 99 methicil...
متن کاملMethicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is not always caught on the orthopaedic ward.
We report the prevalence and incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonisation during the patient journey for patients admitted to orthopaedic and trauma wards. Patients were swabbed for MRSA colonisation on admission, transfer, and discharge from hospital. Elective patients undergoing major joint surgery were also swabbed at a pre-operative assessment clinic. Of the ...
متن کاملMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in orthopaedic trauma: identification of risk factors as a strategy for control of infection.
We have conducted a case-control study over a period of ten years comparing both deep infection with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and colonised cases with a control group. Risk factors associated with deep infection were vascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, admission to a high-dependency or an intensive-care unit and open wounds. Those for colonisation...
متن کاملPrevalence of Vancomycin Resistance in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus
Background & Aims: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens in nosocomial infections. Vancomycin is the most important therapeutic drug of choice for treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. Therefore, vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) or vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) strains are warning...
متن کاملPCR-mediated identification of Methicillin and Vancomycin resistant genes in Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from the nasal cavity
Staphylococcus aureus is colonized in the human nasal cavity and would contaminate hospital and therapeutic environments. This bacterium has a genetic diversity in terms of resistance to antimicrobial agents. Therefore, the purpose of this study was identificatied of Methicillin and Vancomycin resistant genes in Staphylococcus aureus strains which has been isolated from the nasal cavity. 189 pa...
